ACL injuries in female athletes
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are one of the most common knee injuries seen in field sports. Current literature reports most ACL injuries are non-contact and occur during a change direction, deceleration or landing on a single leg. ACL injuries place a significant physiological, psychological and financial burden on athletes and teams.
•Females are 2-9 times more likely to sustain an ACL injury than males
•Females with a previous ACL injury have a 6 fold increased risk to sustain a secondary ACL injury to either the same limb or contra-lateral limb
•Female elite athletes have a RTS 79 %
•Females have been shown to have greater levels of anxiety and more emotions around RTS
•For every month that RTS was delayed until 9 months post op – injury risk reduction was 51%

After injury this is the most common question we get asked!!
Returning to activity/sport post injury can sometimes be a very easy decision and other times it can be very difficult. It can also mean different things to different people. That’s why return to sport testing can aid in the decision and hopefully reduce the risk of re-injury.
What we might question….
What was your injury ?
Have you completed a gradual strength + conditioning program?
Have you done the rehab?? this is a big one
What are the physical requirements of the sport/activity?
What tests will provide us with the best information?
RL Physio uses current technology as well as evidence based practice and sport specific analysis to help you reach your goals of return to sport and activity

LisFranc Injury
I recently presented a live Webinar with Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) around rehabilitation for LisFranc injuries.
In sport most of these injuries occur with a planted foot with a rotation/twist or direct compression. Literature suggests that up to 20% are either missed or misdiagnosed (Suzuki et al., 2020; Cho et al., 2021; Maduka et al., 2023; Mascio et al., 2022)
Early identification and treatment of this injury are crucial for successful outcomes and to prevent long term functional limitations. Rehab needs to be specific to the individual and sport. My advice is top start your rehab with the end in mind. The end being getting back to play.

Hamstring Injury

Hamstring strain injuries commonly occur within team sports. Rugby union (RU) has demonstrated a HSI prevalence of 9.8% (Fuller et al., 2020), and the Australian Football League (AFL) and soccer reported recurrent HSIs rates of 26% (Breed et al., 2024) and 12% (Ekstrand et al., 2011) respectively. HSI within a professional RU team was established to be 5.6 injuries/1,000 player match hours (Brooks et al., 2005a). There is agreement in the literature that the incidence has not declined in the last decade (Timmins et al., 2016).
Nordic Hamstring exercises (NHE) have been shown to be an effective exercise to reduce the incidence of injury. NHE can elicit the highest activation levels in all 3 hamstrings when compared to other exercises A 10Newton increase in strength was associated with a 9% less risk of future HSI.
Main stays of rehab are to restore normal ROM, increase strength and know when to return to run, return to high speed running and return to play. Making sure you tick all the right boxes will help to reduce to rid of re-injury.
